I must have been good because at the end of the interview I was told that Radio FM666 would come to the game and broadcast it live. I was ssooo excited. Now the entire world would hear the game! That’s what I told my team as soon as I arrived at school.

At ten o’clock, a crackly announcement came over the school PA system. ‘Attention. Attention. This is Principal Parrott. As tomorrow is Friday and the last day of term, I have agreed to a netball challenge. Come along and watch the teachers beat the students! Your entry fee is a gold coin for the Lost Dogs’ Home.’

From that moment on the whole school was abuzz with excitement. But no one could believe that Polly-want-a-cracker really thought that the teachers would win.

At the end of the day, our teacher Mr Wexford packed up quickly and said he was off to netball practice. As he walked out the door, he told us that the teachers would let the students get the first few goals, and then go on to win by more than fifty points. We laughed, but we were starting to feel a little nervous.

At four o’clock exactly my team arrived for training. On time.

‘I haven’t eaten since lunchtime!’ Spike complained as he handed out the water bottles.

‘You’ll just have to double-up at dinner time,’ I told him.

Then Toocool said he thought that he should be captain because there were four boys and three girls in the team. I told him it didn’t matter who was what. Then I told him that what did matter was that I was the best player and a great captain. Toocool just shook his head.

We trained hard. Everyone was moving well and listening to my instructions. But there seemed to be one problem.

I thought Stretch was going to be a great player for our team. When he had the ball, he just dropped it in the ring. The problem was Stretch didn’t seem to be able to catch the ball.
