In fact, I’ve never fractured, though I’ve flown

many times through air,

landed hard on the ground. Heartbroken

and silly, yes, but my bones’ve

held. Hers, a little birdish, shifted

around, some vertebrae

slipped sideways in their tower.

This was after she lifted

all those buckets of rocks and concrete

up the metal scaffolds.

She wanted us to build, ourselves, the house

we lived in. The thick walls kept us

from the fire that licked up the canyon,

charred the graceful summer

grass into nothing. So those rocks

were, perhaps, worth it.

She, reinforced now with metal rods.

For everything the spiders have

to offer, she’s been born or hurt

too early: the nerve graphs,

the pain-relief toxins,

the spider-silk screws

which flex like the bones

they’re in.
