Chapter Fourteen

FAITH

It took a real effort to force my eyelids to open, and when I did, I panicked at the darkness above me. It took a few seconds for me to remember we were in a cave underground and that I hadn’t gone blind. To be honest, the memory didn’t do much to reassure me. I struggled to breathe and wondered if I was having a panic attack. Rolling onto my side, I gripped the edge of the stone to stop myself from falling off the table and pushed myself upright. Ohh... bad idea.... My head swam, and I closed my eyes briefly as nausea rushed over me. A strong arm wrapped around my shoulders, and I leaned into it before resting my head against his shoulder in case it brought the dizziness back.

“Take it easy, Faith. You’ve lost a lot of blood. You need to try to stay calm. We don’t want your heart rate to go crazy when you’re low on blood. You could go into hypovolemic shock.”

“Oh yeah, impress a girl with big words,” I slurred as I pulled my legs up onto the table and out of the cold water. Cold water? My eyes flew open, and I stared in horror as the water swirled around the table. I turned to Amadi. “How long was I out?”

His lips pressed together. “Sadly, not that long.”

I turned around to see Cas, Euriel, and Alex standing over by the wall, and fought the urge to leap off the table and throw myself at Alex at the sight of him standing up and talking. I settled for sliding into the water and wading over to him. I wrapped my arms around his waist and pulled him close. He put one of his arms around my shoulders and squeezed briefly before pulling away and bending closer to the surface of the water.

He looked up at Cas, pretty much ignoring me. “He should be back by now, Cas.”

I opened my mouth to ask him what was wrong and why he was being so off with me when his words suddenly hit me. I looked around the cave. “Where’s Sam?”

The guys glanced at each other, their expressions serious.

Ignoring Alex, who had obviously decided to be an arsehole since he came back from the dead thanks to me, I turned to Cas. “Cas, where’s Sam?”

He closed his eyes briefly then met my gaze, wrapping his arm around my shoulders. “He’s trying to find a way out. Alex thinks the damage that caused the flood has widened the drain, and it may be an exit… if we can swim that far.”

I hit his arm. “And you fucking let him? Seriously, I pass out for five fucking minutes and you guys come up with this insane plan? Right, that’s it. I don’t care if you guys are older than Noah, I am taking charge of this group before we all die!” I paused to catch my breath, suddenly realising that at least three of these guys actually were older than Noah.
