The world seemed more confusing than ever. But as Nell looked at the Netherbeast, who was purring like a chainsaw while gnawing on a rose branch, she felt he was less confusing than everything else. At least the Netherbeast knew what he was doing. Always. Even if it was something horrible, the Netherbeast meant to be doing it, and to be doing it exactly that way.

“What would you do if the meanest girl in school called you a moose?” Nell asked the cat.

The Netherbeast thoughtfully chewed a mouthful of thorns.

“What if you were sent away from the only place where you didn’t feel like a moose?” Nell closed her eyes. “What if the only person who ever made you feel less . . . moosey . . . became a different person? And suddenly all they cared about was leaving you and going away to stupid college?”

The Netherbeast spat out the rose branch. He flipped onto his back and waggled his paws. Nell smiled and rubbed his fluffy tum.

The Netherbeast chomped her fingers.

“Ow!” Nell jerked her hand back in pain. Then she laughed. “You’ll never change. You’ll always be as yourself as you can be. I’m pretty sure of that.” She sat back. “And you know? I think that’s a good thing.” She closed her eyes. “I’m going to need a Band-Aid.”
