Kerensky as a young and idealistic barrister defending free of charge victims of injustice and Jews tortured and harassed by the Tsar’s secret police
Alexander Kerensky photographed on his American speaking tour when he met Flora Solomon. Now a successful author and a very popular public speaker, he had developed self-confidence and acquired a large following of devoted female admirers.
Most of the readers of his previous publication were Russian émigrés, educated but with little money. He found out the hard way advertisers did not buy space in newspapers whose readers lacked spending power.
Flora asked how much money was needed to bring out this new publication for a year, aware that émigré Russians were mainly poor and needed a publication which was subsidised. When Kerensky named the sum he needed, Flora did a quick calculation and offered to pay half the required sum which would be transferred through Benenson’s Bank to him as soon as he wanted.
Kerensky was overcome. He took Flora’s hand in both of his, thanked her for her generosity which would help Novaia Rossiia, promote democracy and hopefully would lead to Stalin’s downfall.
They toasted the success of their joint venture and discovered they had both spent their youth in St Petersburg, a magical river city where in summer the golden twilight continued till dawn.
Kerensky told Flora that having lost a kidney to cancer he rarely drank alcohol, but this was such a special evening, they should celebrate with more brandy.
Flora had no intention of telling Nell the whole story. She had found Kerensky very attractive and he had moved to sit beside her on the bed. They were kissing and embracing when they heard a knock on the door.
Kerensky gestured that he would hide in the bathroom. Flora adjusted her clothes and waited a few minutes before opening the door to an embarrassed night manager who informed her that gentlemen were not allowed in ladies’ bedrooms. Alexander Kerensky had been seen entering the lift and journalists were waiting in the lobby to interview him.
Flora stared down at the night manager and told him in an icy voice that for the past five years her father had been a permanent resident at his hotel. No one had ever complained when her father invited young ladies to join him in his penthouse suite. Perhaps he would like to explain why he was complaining when she was having a business discussion with Alexander Kerensky?
The night manager grovelled, offered his apologies and retreated.
Kerensky emerged from the bathroom roaring with laughter. He told Flora he admired the way she had dealt with the situation. He added it was not the first time he had had to retreat to a hotel bathroom on a speaking tour. They both laughed. Flora knew many women found Kerensky irresistible and had hoped to become his second wife. She was not looking for another husband and was happy with a loose relationship. This set the pattern for their future. Flora knew Kerensky had other women in Paris and on his author tours but did not care.
