CHAPTER NINETEEN

Carrie stood in her bedroom looking into the mirror. She looked exhausted and she was feeling sick. But she couldn’t stay at home. She had more pressing matters on her mind. So opening her wardrobe, she found an old grey hoodie and her fur-lined suede boots. Slipping these on over her Levi’s, she made her way downstairs. A taxi was waiting to take her to the hospital to visit Dilly, so that she could take over from her mum and sisters.

Spud was continually dominating her thoughts, and she hoped and prayed that the Carson brothers hadn’t got to him. Since no one had called their phone, she assumed he had gone about his business and the Carsons had simply gotten bored and gone home. However, when she got out of the taxi and saw the two police cars at A&E, a dark thought crossed her mind. It wasn’t possible, was it?

About to walk into the main entrance to go to the intensive care wards, Carrie saw a face she knew very well. It was James Murphy.

James had a reputation for being a real gentleman unless you crossed him. Then if you did, or provoked any of his family, he wouldn’t leave you with a bruise: he’d leave you disabled for life.

He had the knack of evoking a sense of awkwardness in Carrie, which was exceptionally rare, because no one else came close to doing that. He was older than her, being in his early thirties, so that interested her. But the main attraction was that she found him exceptionally good looking in a very masculine way. His movements were not just deliberate but also precise, and when he was minded to, he could speak proper English, which just made him stand out from the riff-raff where she lived. And even his piercing green eyes looked right into you, sussing you out before you opened your mouth to speak. He would undoubtedly have any person of authority in knots.

‘Hiya, James, how are you?’ She smiled politely but realised how childish she sounded.

‘Well, hello, Carrie. I’m good, love.’ He paused and looked her up and down. ‘I heard about your Dilly. Mum sent some flowers. How’s she doing?’

Carrie slid her hands into the pockets of her hoodie and blushed. ‘She’s stable but still very poorly. She’s in there.’ She pointed down the corridor. ‘Me muvver and sisters are with her. I’m just taking over for a bit. We don’t like to leave her alone.’

‘Christ, is she still in hospital? Was it that serious? We never knew it was that bad. Fuck.’

‘Yes, she’s lost a lot of blood. She nearly died.’

‘Am I correct in believing it was Arthur Carson?’

She nodded. ‘Yep.’

He rubbed the back of his head and moved uncomfortably from one leg to the other. ‘I know you married Jimmy, and what a fucking shame that was. I’ll be honest, Carrie, I like you and your family, but don’t invite me around for dinner at the Carson’s place because I’m sorry, love, I’m not a fan of any of them.
