Chapter Seven

“Are you out of your freaking mind? You need to get out of there!”

I sighed into the phone. While I was definitely looking for help, maybe a little bit of commiseration, I wasn’t looking to be told to jump ship. “Lily. Calm down.”

“Excuse me? You tell me that your ghost had the potential to be a corpomancer and then expect me to calm down? You can’t trust anything he tells you! A ghost will lie as easily as a regular human will if it means getting what they want.”

“And what does this one want?” I asked. “What? Because so far, all I’ve got to go on is the fact that he loves his dog and seems to have loved Jimmy Remington before he moved away. That’s not exactly indicative of a violent mind, and nothing in his file points that way either.”

“Long game.”

I groaned. “Lily …”

“It could be a long game! Or something went wrong while he was alive, and now he sees you as a way out. He shouldn’t have pulled you into a vision like that, Carsen. That should be impossible for a ghost that’s this old unless they’re developing dark powers.”

“It could be a shrine situation,” I said. “Maybe it’s not dark powers holding him in place, maybe it’s …”

“What, prayer? Worship? From whom?” she demanded. “The only guy who knew where he was is the same one who buried him, and he’s been dead for five years. His family didn’t even know Rafael Medrano existed.”

“But that makes sense, given the time period,” I replied. “They couldn’t just announce to the world that they were in love, could they?”

“Of course not, but—”

“I know there’s a precedent for this somewhere,” I went on, determined to get my point across. “Someone not understanding their own spiritual power until they died and that power influencing their afterlife.” In a not-negative way, that is. There were plenty of historical examples of people dying in ignorance, then going on to haunt their former residences and relatives, but I needed a positive one.

“Yeah, religions are full of them,” Lily said dryly. “So are myths. That’s not what we’re dealing with here.”

“How do you know that?” I asked, a little desperately, but she hadn’t seen what I had. “I’m telling you, he’s powerful, but he’s good. He didn’t mean to drag me into a vision, and the scene was rough, but it showed him trying to take care of people. Taking care of me. He thought I was Jimmy.”

She was quiet for a moment. “That could be dangerous in and of itself,” she said at last. “What if he’s trying to make you into his new Jimmy? A psychopomp for his lost soul? What if he can’t move on without Jimmy, and he’s decided you’re going to be him?”

It wouldn’t be the first time a spirit had played that kind of game with the living in an effort to get back something they could never truly have again, but … “Why not let people onto the land earlier, then, to give himself options?” I murmured.
