CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

The faint crackle of the radio was Grace's only companion as she strode along the narrow trail by Lake Teal’s northern shore. As she walked, her flashlight swinging to and fro, all her senses were on high alert. Her ears were straining for any sounds but picking up only the rustle of the leaves in the gusting wind and the faint swish and crackle of wavelets on the semi-frozen lake shore. Her eyes were following the flashlight beam, alert for any movements that might show her someone was hiding. Searching for any shape or color that might point the way to the killer.

And, of course, she was also relying on her investigator's sixth sense, that feeling that she was on the right track, that someone was watching her, that an unfriendly presence was nearby.

She felt that strongly. Her spine was prickling with the instinctive awareness that trouble lurked ahead. It was a feeling that was usually right, and she trusted it now. Grace's hand moved to her gun, brushing the grip, making sure she could draw it quickly if she needed to, even with her gloves on.

"Possible sighting to the southeast." Another voice from the radio startled her, drawing her attention away from her surroundings as she listened in.

There was more conversation. Two police were veering off the trail to investigate a parked car. Grace felt hopeful. That might be his vehicle. Right now, they needed any leads because so far, all they'd had was a series of dead ends.

Grace knew she needed to sit down with Dylan, take some time with him, ask him how he was coping with this case. She knew he was taking strain, and she could see what bad timing it was for him. She was sure that he'd decided to look into his sister Lizzie's disappearance again. And she knew how painful that was likely to be.

Old wounds would be opened. Fears would have to be confronted all over again.

And the worst of it was that with such an old, cold case, it might only end in disappointment.

But she had his back. That, she resolved. Whatever it took, whatever he needed, she was going to give it.

Turning her thoughts back to the terrain, she swung the light around again, taking care not to lose focus.

It was then that she saw it. No more than a glimpse, but it was enough to show her the definite, brief silhouette.

Dark, moving fast, and as she watched, the figure melted into the woods.

It was a man in a thick jacket and boots. About a hundred yards ahead. She'd been lucky to see him at all. The glimmer of the moon had helped.

Quickly, quietly, she spoke into the radio.

"Possible suspect identified. Heading into the woods, just before the junction with Frost Trail. Any backup nearby?"

As Grace strode forward, the radio crackled again.

"The path will come out on the other side at Berry Road North. I'll send a car there now."

"We can go," another voice added.

"I'll get back to the car as soon as I can.
