15. Hosey

“Hey,” Mary said loudly. “Liz. When exactly did Brian call you about this priesthood thing?”

Liz almost took a step back, alarmed. “Um, Brian talked to me a few days ago. Wednesday, I think. Why?”

“Because yesterday,” Mary said, “Brian specifically told me that he hadn’t talked to you in weeks.”

“Well, duh,” Liz said, trying to remain nonchalant. “Of course he didn’t tell you about talking to me; he wants to keep it secret.”

“That’s what I thought, too,” Mary said through clenched teeth. “But then I remembered something. I didn’t even ask Brian about you—he told me on his own. He was complaining about it. ‘Liz never talks to me anymore, I miss her. Blah blah blah.’ And you know what? I believed him. Just like I believed you.”

Liz felt suddenly the need to vacate the premises, rapidly. “Look, Mary—”

“Which means,” Mary said over her, “That either Brian is a really good liar, or you are. Gee, Liz, I wonder which one of you it is.”

Liz opened her mouth. Nothing came out. Mary laughed harshly. “Brian told me about your acting. I should have remembered.” She turned and walked away.

Liz stood gaping at her. Then, not knowing what else to do, she ran after her. “Mary! Wait!”

“Get away from me,” Mary said as she kept walking.

“I’m sorry!”

Mary turned on her. “I don’t forgive you,” she snapped.

Liz blinked. That stung a lot more than she had expected. “Look, calm down. It was just a joke—”

“It was a lie,” Mary said over her. “You lied, and now you’re lying about a lie. You’re pathetic.”

“Oh, I’m pathetic?” Liz clenched her fists. “Like you’re one to talk. You can’t—”

“You are pathetic,” Mary said again. “You act all cool, but guess what? You’re not.” She spun around, her brown hair flaring out and hitting Liz in the face, and stalked off.

Then she stopped again and turned around. Now she was smirking. “Oh, I almost forgot. You are in love with Brian, aren’t you?”

“No!” Liz said fervently. “I wasn’t lying about that.”

“Aw, really? Are you sure?” Mary’s voice was heavy with fake sympathy. “Because I hear from everyone that you’re head over heels for him.”

Liz felt her face grow hot. It couldn’t be true. Mary was lying now. Wasn’t she? Normally Liz could tell. But not now, not with this pounding in her head and the walls closing in.

“So sorry, Liz,” Mary said, mocking. “You and Brian—that’s never gonna happen. Not after I tell him what you just tried to do.” With a little smirk, she turned and walked away.

Liz couldn’t move. She felt like her limbs had been turned to stone. Like a sandbag had been placed on her back, rooting her in place. Every part of her body felt cold and heavy, except for her head. Her head was burning.

Mary was going to tell Brian. She was going to tell him Liz was in love with him, and that she had tried to trick them into breaking up. And what would Brian think? He would be outraged.
