In closing

I do not consider myself a superficial person. I see the problems of scarcity, lack, and poverty that plague the world. I understand that for the largest portion of the Earth's inhabitants the word abundance, as most people now use it, has little meaning. More meaningful, to them, is the word survival.

I am also clear that this does not have to be. None of us should have to worry about day-to-day survival. That should be guaranteed, as should the basic human dignity of sufficient food, clothing, and shelter for all. Why we, as humans, do not share more freely of all that we have (a tiny percentage of the world's people holds a massive percentage of the world's wealth and resources), is no mystery. Most people believe in “lack.” That is, they believe—even those with a great deal (perhaps, especially those with a great deal) believe—that there is “not enough to go around.” Or, put another way, if everyone on the planet had a fair share, then those of us who have a disproportionate share would not have “enough.”

This leads to a not unimportant question. When is “enough” enough?

For people whose chief reward in life, whose highest satisfaction and grandest experience, is derived from their quality of being, whatever they now have is enough. That is the lesson that some spiritual masters who give up everything and live lives of renunciation are seeking to teach. They do not seek to demonstrsate that renunciation is necessary to achieve true happiness. They seek merely to show that material possessions are not necessary.

Yet when a high state of beingness is turned into doingness in the physical world, one has achieved Right Livelihood, and struggle disappears from our lives, to be replaced by true abundance. Mter I read this in the Conversations with God books, I yearned to know, in a practical sense, how to do this. I earnestly wanted to know how to transform my activity in the work-a-day world into a sacred expression of Who I Really Am.

The result was an inspiration that produced a small book, called Bringers of the Light, which those who have read it have told me has brought understanding, at last, to this mystery of life. This little book is available from ReCreation, the non-profit foundation that Nancy and I formed a few years ago to help handle all the incoming energy (now almost 300 letters a week from all over the world) that has resulted from the publication of Conversations with God, and to spread its message.

If you are looking for a more interactive experience, each year the foundation presents three five-day intensives, “Recreating Your Self.” Based on the messages in CWG, they are designed especially for those who are looking closely at the lives they are currently experiencing, and seeking ways that they can bring about real change.
