As early as 1831, Joseph had believed in polygamy but foresaw widespread opposition—both within and outside the Mormon community. He did not explain the doctrine until 1843 in Nauvoo. Many Mormons accepted the practice; others became deeply troubled. Word got out about men having multiple wives, and people became outraged. Joseph also began to teach other controversial beliefs—that people were as eternal as God; that human intelligence had existed forever, and that humans could become like gods themselves.

As the Mormons flourished in Nauvoo, they again suffered contempt for their beliefs, especially about marriage and family life. People in neighboring communities also resented their prosperity, political power, and independence. Some people wrongly feared that the Mormons might even try to establish their own nation separate from the United States.
