The birds follow three simple rules, as explained in Craig W. Reynolds’s 1987 paper.Collision avoidance: Each bird avoids colliding with the other birds in the flock.

Velocity uniformity: All birds keep the same velocity.

Flock centering. All birds try to move toward the center of the flock.

In a bird swarm, there is a local behavior associated with each bird, called the cognitive component . There is also a global behavior called the social component . The dynamics of a swarm are based on the history of previous behaviors shown by an individual member and that of the entire group. The birds change their position and velocity based on their own experience and that of the group.
