Solitary bees (Andrena, Lasioglossum and other species)

There are around 250 species of solitary bee in Britain.

Unlike bumble and honeybees, solitary bees do not have a worker caste.

Each female constructs and provides food for her nest, then dies before the next generation emerges.

Despite being solitary, some are pretty sociable with other nests nearby.

Soil-nesting bees produce conical heaps of soil above the nest tunnels where excavated soil has been deposited. You’ve probably seen them.

Other solitary bees make their nests in hollow plant stems, soft rotten wood, and beetle holes in dead wood. The leaf-cutter bee makes its nest from, yes you guessed it … leaves!

Most solitary bees are active in spring or summer, although the ivy bee has become widespread since it was found in Britain in 2001 (the adults visit ivy flowers in autumn).
