*Theodore Dreiser, The Financier. Completely revised edition (New York: Boni & Liveright, 1927). I have chosen Dreiser’s revision of the much longer 1912 edition for discussion and citation. It is about one-third shorter than the original, and I find that its greater compactness promotes a sense of the unity of the themes within the work.

*Theodore Dreiser, The Titan (New York: John Lane, 1914). All references to The Titan will be from this edition. From this point on, I shall insert an F9 T, or S before a page number to identify the reference as to Financier, Titan, or Stoic.

*Theodore Dreiser, The Stoic (New York: Doubleday, 1947). Subsequent references to The Stoic will be from this edition.
