Cayenne Pepper (Capsicum spp.)

Parts used: Fruit

Actions: Anodyne, carminative, stimulant

Medicinal uses: Cayenne pepper and other hot peppers contain capsaicin, a compound that inhibits the release of substance P. Like meadowsweet, cayenne contains salicylate compounds. Cayenne has a powerful stimulating effect on the circulatory system throughout the body. For headaches related to vasospasm, constriction, and feelings of cold, cayenne is a fast-acting, warming remedy.

Dosage: Cayenne is most often used in combination with other herbs. Alone, it is very powerful and should be used sparingly. Adults should take 15 drops of tincture in ¼ cup warm water three times a day. Cayenne is not recommended on its own for children.

Caution: Cayenne contains salicylate compounds and should not be given to children with viral infections, as there is an associated risk of developing Reye’s syndrome. If you are using aspirin or blood-thinning treatments, consult your health care practitioner before using cayenne.
