Chapter Ten

I close the door behind me and lean against it for a few seconds. Rose is coming down the stairs so I head for my room, hoping to escape her inquisition—even though there’s not a snowball’s chance in hell of that happening. “I don’t feel like talking right now, Rose.” But I was never going to get away from her that easily.

She follows me into my bedroom, closing the door behind us. Her eyes are wide with zealous excitement. “You were out with Vaughn Tucker? Are you kidding me? I thought you were going out with Dylan. What happened?”

She takes a long look at me, noticing my disheveled hair, my wrinkled dress, my swollen lips from his punishing kisses, and quite possibly the wild, I’ve-just-come-twice-and-it-was-the-most-intense-and-magical-thing-that’s-ever-happened-in-my-life look in my eyes. I hope his cum isn’t still on my face or somehow still visible.

“You had sex with him?”

“No.” I go into the bathroom but she follows me in there. “Rose. Do you mind?”

She closes the toilet seat and sits on it. “Tell me everything.”

I take along look at myself in the mirror and I look … amazing. My cheeks are flushed and my eyes are bright. I look like I just had the best night of my damn life. He’s right too: my eyes do have starbursts of different shades of gold. I’d never really noticed that before.

“Where did you go?” Rose asks. “How did you run into Vaughn? I thought they already left for their tour. Does Ruby know?”

“I need to get ready for my class.”

“No way. There’s no way in hell I’m letting you go anywhere until you tell me what happened. Where did you go?”

I relent, only because I’ll be late if I don’t. “To Nashville.”

“In a limo?”

“In a helicopter. What time is it?” I squeeze some toothpaste onto my toothbrush and start brushing my teeth.

“A helicopter? It’s nine-thirty.”

“Shit.” I wash my face. “I have a class at ten. Is anyone using the car?” And then I remember. Vaughn bought Momma a new car.

“Which one?” Rose asks. “The minivan or the freaking Corvette?”

“I know. I can’t believe that.”

“Gi, you have to tell me what’s going on. Is the Corvette from Vaughn? Or Travis? Momma said it’s for her. I don’t get it.”

“Vaughn bought it for her because she gave him a nice meal and some pie.”

Rose is uncharacteristically silent for a few seconds. “Pie?”

“Yes.”

“If he gives out Corvettes for a slice of pie, I wonder what he’s going to give you. You look like you just banged the Dallas Cowboys. First and second strings.”

“Would you stop? I won’t get to class on time if I don’t leave within the next five minutes.” I spray on some perfume and attempt to smooth my hair. “And I already told you. I didn’t have sex with him.”

“I told you it would happen.”

“What would happen?”

“The bad boy who shows up out of the blue and sweeps you off your feet in a goddamn helicopter! It was always your destiny. I can’t believe I totally predicted this!” She’s much more excited than I feel.
