Berthier, Napoleon’s invaluable chief of staff.

The passage of the River Niemen on 24 June 1812, at the start of the fateful Russian campaign.

The Last Act

The Russians flooded into the Duchy of Warsaw in the early months of 1813; they occupied the city on 9 February, and Poniatowski began the painful business of reorganizing his forces from Krakow. Elements of Polish units were scattered all over northern Europe, and it was not until the victory of Lützen brought a brief respite with the armistice of Pleisswitz that a Polish corps could be assembled. By this time the Russian advance had pushed Poniatowski back to Zittau in Saxony. From composite units of survivors, raw conscripts, renumbered regiments, returned prisoners and other ‘odds and ends’, Napoleon and Poniatowski created VIII Corps, as follows:

26th Infantry Division (Gen. Kamieniecki): 1st Brigade (Gen. Sierawski), 1st and 16th Infantry Regiments; 2nd Brigade (Gen. Malachowski), 8th and 15th Infantry Regiments.

27th Infantry Division (Gen. Krasinski): 1st Brigade (Gen. Grabowski) 12th Infantry Regiment; 2nd Brigade (Gen. Lonczynski) 2nd and 14th Infantry Regiments (ex-Dombrowski’s division).
