We don’t have Victor’s own comments on this incident, but clearly Victor felt that his men were of more use actively endeavouring to stop the Spanish armies attacking the French than cooped up behind walls. Indeed, the threat from the Spanish army was a real one as King Joseph made clear and, albeit grudgingly, he admitted that Victor had been correct to keep Ruffin’s division ready for action:5

KING JOSEPH TO MARSHAL VICTOR.

El Pardo, December 26, 1808.

Marshal Lefebvre was ordered to attack the enemy occupying Almaraz on the 24th; after having beaten him, he was to return to Talavera, and to try and approach so as to be two from marches of Madrid; it is possible that enemy parties formed on his rear prevent his couriers from passing information; it is important to know where the enemy is; it would be good to detach a regiment of cavalry to bring to Marshal Lefebvre the duplicate of the order which the King sent to him, and which he may not have received. It is unfortunate to have abandoned Toledo before having heard from this marshal; the movement on Val DeMoro would have the same disadvantage. You have to get in touch with him so he knows he has to get closer to Madrid. As soon as the marshal is in Pinto, Ruffin’s division can join him before the enemy.
