“So, we have some progress!” Lester announced. “My colleague has informed me that the stones are, in fact, still at the museum. However, they are being stored in the back room. I was able to obtain some photos of them, though, as per your request. That should definitely make it easier to get out of there with them.”

Lester grinned and handed the photos to Apollo, who leafed through them and handed them over to Ares.

“Those should go directly to Eden,” he said.

“Of course,” Ares replied, looking through the pictures. They didn’t show every single angle of the stones, but they would have to do. Seeing them at last gave Ares a light feeling in his chest. It was nice to see that they were making progress. Maybe the mission wasn’t doomed to failure after all.

“You haven’t told her what any of this is about yet, have you?” Apollo asked, raising his brow. “I got the sense of that when she came into the kitchen the other night.”

“No, I haven’t,” Ares said, sighing heavily. “But I want to be closer to her. And to be completely honest, not only that but I want to talk to Luna about it too. But if I tell Luna before I tell Eden, I’m afraid it will freak Eden out too much if Luna lets something slip.”

“She has already shown remarkable insight and dedication to you and your daughter,” Achilles said. “She is loyal. She is kind. What more do you need of her before you trust her with the truth?”

“Are you sure that’s a good idea, though?” Ares asked, feeling a little bit pressured. What he wouldn’t give to be accepted by a woman like Eden for being exactly who he was. For being true to himself and honest about what his life’s work was and why it meant so much to him. It was obvious they were developing feelings for each other. The way they looked at one another sometimes left him breathless, and he knew by the redness in her cheeks that he affected her more than she let on. It was obvious to everyone that they had bonded, and closely. Maybe Achilles was right. She was loyal. Why couldn’t he just tell her the truth.

“While it may be dangerous to those involved in the mission to know certain things, it is almost certainly more dangerous to be a part of the mission in total ignorance. If you want to keep her safe, let her know what she is up against. You have our full blessing to be transparent with her. And if she can’t deal with the truth or the pressure, then there are other alternatives. We are close to obtaining the stones. If we have to steal them outright without her replicas, so be it. Soon, you will have no need for a nanny anyway and, unless something has developed, she will be on her way.”

The truth in Apollo’s words was startling to Ares. It was true. As soon as they had completed the mission, he wouldn’t need anyone to stay home with his daughter anymore.
