CHAPTER SEVEN: Will we ever get home?

We reached the driveway much quicker than I thought (hoped) we would. We huddled together on the opposite side of the road next to the trees a few yards from the crooked mailbox that marked the way to the werewolf’s (den, lair?) home.

All my senses were on high alert, looking for any movement other than the swaying of the trees and the quickening snowfall, and listening for sounds other than my own rapid heartbeat and Mike’s heavy mouth-breathing beside me. I sniffed the air, though I wouldn’t know a werewolf odor from any other.

I glanced at Becky. She stared across the road and then looked at me.

“Looks okay,” I whispered.

“It’s quiet,” she whispered back.

“Let’s hurry?”

“Yeah.”

We crept as silently as we could along the tree line. I never took my eyes off the end of the drive, ready to run if a huge hairy beast suddenly appeared. I would have ran if a cute, harmless bunny hopped into my line of sight, I was so tense!

When we could no longer see the driveway, we moved back onto the road, smiling at one another in relief. We were less than a mile from my house and safety. I picked up the pace a little, both to help keep warm and to match the constant tick, tick, tick of the clock inside my head counting down to curfew and another possible punishment.

I could have kicked myself for not wearing my cute purple Timex Aunt Mortie had given me for my last birthday. I had no real idea what time it was, but it felt late. Late was not good.

The snow had picked up its pace pouring from the night sky in a steady stream and being blown by a harsh north wind. We had to walk with our heads leaning to the left side to keep the wind and snow out of our ears. I was freezing! I couldn’t feel my feet anymore and my fingers were stiff. We trudged on in silence, too cold to talk.

When something big stepped out of the trees and onto the road beside us I yelped and tried to run. Becky, who had not seen what I had seen but trusted that if I screamed and ran it was time for her to also, let out a screech of her own and tried to sprint away. We promptly ran into each other, our feet somehow became tangled and we fell in a heap onto the snowy road. Mike, who was behind us, jumped over us and landed hard on the edge of the road and fell, rolling into the small ditch with a cry of pain.

My first thought, upon sprawling on my face in the road, was “Ouch!”

The next thing that went through my mind was, “Anyone this clumsy deserves to be eaten by a werewolf.” I can be extremely critical of myself and my faults sometimes, especially if I am about to be attacked by a monster.

“Sorry, hey, so sorry! We didn’t mean to scare you,” a voice said.
