INVITATIONS HOME
Always bring a gift for the host(ess) when invited to a private home. Flowers (it is very nice to send them ahead of time), wine, a small bowl for serving nuts, or some small item from your home country is appreciated. Nothing personal should be given.
On arrival, as well as before departing, you should go around the room to greet or meet and shake hands with everyone. Once you know someone well, it is common for men and women to kiss on both cheeks as well as for two women to kiss on both cheeks. Handshakes range from the subdued European manner to the more complicated and hearty African style. Generally, the host or hostess will make the introductions.
For the most part, table manners are European, with fork held in the left hand and not switched to the right, American-style. Both hands are generally kept in view. Wine or beer may be served and there is usually at least a word of âcheersâ before everyone drinks. Wait for everyone to be served before you eat, unless you are at a braai or buffet meal. Some Africans traditionally eat with their hands when in their home village and, on occasion at a formal dinner, you might see someone pick up a bone to savor the last bits. If this bothers you, remember you are in a country where table manners come in an infinite variety. Refrain from smoking at table between courses, even if ashtrays have been provided, unless your host lights up.
When visiting a Namibian family, especially in remote areas, expect extended greetings and handshakes. If food and drink is offered, it is polite to accept.
