Five days later, a box appeared on our front porch. I brought it to Luka as he drank his morning tea, assuming it was meant for him. He eyed it as he sipped slowly from his chipped cup.

“It’s yours,” he said in a weary voice.

“You know what it is, then?” I listed the box from side to side, trying to assess its contents. Luka only grunted in reply and continued on with his tea. I gave him one last curious look before I set the box on the table. Once opened, I spied brown wrapping paper tied together with a string. Curious, I pulled the string and peered inside the paper. Fabric? I ran a hand over the light green cloth, then pulled it out.

“A dress?” I peered up at Luka, who didn’t seem in the least surprised. “Did you…”

Luka shook his head. “That farmhand told me he wanted to give this to you.”

“He bought me a dress?” I asked, dumbfounded. This had to have been very expensive, and I suspected Gabriel had little money to begin with. I focused on Luka, holding the garment in my hands. “Would you let me go? Would you switch places with me so I could go to the festival?”

Luka watched me with sad eyes, silent and pensive. I was about to retract my question when he stood and rubbed his eyes with his thumb and forefinger. “I want to remind you about the conversation we had the other day—what I told you about my past. But I won’t take this away from you. If you want to go, I’ll switch patrol nights with you.”

For my whole life, Luka had always been stern, constantly instructing me on the duties of the Sentinel, but lately I had caught rare glimpses of the tender-hearted man that lay underneath that tough exterior.

“Thank you, Luka. This means a lot to me.” That dangerous hope welled up within me again.
