The Electra complex has always been something of a poor stepsister to Oedipus and has never caught the modern imagination in quite the same way. I can’t help but wonder if the problem has almost as much to do with the specific myth chosen to tag it as with Freud’s later uncertainty about the complex’s very existence. The Electra story is simply not a very good fit when you think about it. To be sure, Electra harbors matricidal thoughts, though in the end her brother does as well. And there is no room in her story for the fantasy or possibility of incest with the father, who is, after all, already dead. Really, the myth of Myrrha might have been a much better choice.
