Sad

Ingrid is paralyzed by fear.

The man with the black eyes stares at her. She wants to run away, but she’s petrified. Then he draws a deep sigh and turns around.

He looks at the creek and his head droops a bit. It’s as if he’s not angry anymore. Actually, he looks like he’s sad.

“Who are you?” Ingrid asks.

He looks back at her. “Are you sure you want to know?”

“Yes. And I also want to know why you tried to drown that poor fisherman. What did he do?”

“That poor fisherman!” the man sneers. “He tried to drive me out of my home with that … thing!” He points at the burning stake. Then he kicks it so it lands in the wet grass and the flame goes out.

The man turns his back on Ingrid again. He’s shaking. He looks like he’s crying.

“What’s the matter?” Ingrid asks.

“I wasn’t trying to drown him,” he sniffles. “I just wanted some company.”

Ingrid doesn’t quite understand. “In the water?”

The man turns slowly towards her. “You’ve never heard of me?”

Ingrid shakes her head.

He looks at her. “Alright, I’ll show you who I am.”

Now something happens to him. His head changes shape, so it looks like a fish head. His long hair and beard is gone and his skin turns green and full of scales.

His clothes change as well. They turn into a worn-out pair of swimming trunks. He has webbed fingers and toes now.

Ingrid is speechless. A green creature that looks like a cross between a man and a fish is standing right in front of her. And it’s staring at her with its black bog eyes.

“I’m the creek dweller,” he says.
