Sharp Teeth
Dagmar stares.
Now a big grey fish glides by. It’s at least as long as he dad is tall. Its nose is pointy and its black eyes are threatening. And worst of all: Its mouth is slightly open, so its teeth are visible.
“A porbeagle,” Storm whispers.
“Sharp teeth,” Dagmar whispers back.
“It’s a kind of shark and they’re one of the most dangerous enemies of the merpeople,” Storm says in a hushed voice. “Let’s get out of here.”
Dagmar nods.
Storm looks out through the crack. The coast is clear now. Then he drags along Dagmar. Quickly, they glide over the giant reef.
“Next stop: The Norwegian Trench. The deepest part of the sea. This is where the merpeople live,” Storm says.
Dagmar looks down at the reef. It’s as if something’s wrong with it now. It has no sea anemones – only grey, bare rocks.
“What happened to the reef?” she says.
“Fishermen. They’re even worse than the sharks. They destroy our reefs with their nets,” Storm says.
“Aaw!” Dagmar says.
Storm sends her a sneaky look. “In return, we cut through their nets. Fair’s fair.”
“Hmmm,” Dagmar says. She’s not sure if she agrees. She likes eating fish and chips.
As they go deeper, Dagmar starts to hear something. Someone is singing. It’s very beautiful. She stares. Three mermaids are coming straight at her! They all have green tails with shiny scales and long hair that shines like the sun. Around their necks and on their heads they wear beautiful chains made of seashells and snail shells.
“They’re my sisters!” Storm says. “Wave, Raincloud, and Sea Breeze.”
“Eeeeh!” Raincloud says in her beautiful voice. “A real girl!” The mermaids swim around Dagmar and Storm.
“With a real dress,” Sea Breeze says.
“And real legs!” Wave says.
“Who is she, Storm?” Raincloud asks.
“She’s my friend, Dagmar,” Storm answers.
“But Storm! You can’t just bring a girl down here,” Wave says.
“Mom and Dad will be cross!” Raincloud says.
“Mom and Dad are out. Why don’t we show her the palace?” Storm asks.
“You live in a palace?” Dagmar asks. “Under the sea?”
Storm nods and the mermaids giggle. But just like that, they freeze.
“Oh no!” says Sea Breeze. “Shark!”
Now Dagmar sees the enormous porbeagle from before. And it’s swimming straight at them.
