THEY WERE EASY TO find.

They were the men who beat their chest, who shouted the loudest in their taverns, threatening women with winks and violence. They drank too quickly and talked too boastfully of their conquests real and imagined.

She approached them all, draped in a dark cloak with only a coil of blonde hair to show against her bright face.

She had no doubt that she was beautiful when she told them her story. A mysterious pale-fleshed woman who spoke with honeyed-voice and words. And the story she told was a great and timeless thing of a monster in the woods, who lived in a windowless castle with a beautiful wife. A wife who would be all alone when the creature was slain, when its many treasures were taken. A wife who would be grateful for her rescue. And if she was not…well, the castle was windowless, was it not?

They would laugh and leer and garb her in slobbery words. But she would merely and turn them away, turning her back on those dangerous men. And they never followed her, always too scared to pursue something they could not immediately understand.

And she would smile in the winter chill, beneath her black hood and red lips.

The men would come in the morning, after the drink had settled in their stomach and the story had seized their minds.

They always did.
