WE GET INTO MY compound, underneath Michigan and Wacker in an area that used to house shops and restaurants. Now it’s corporate security headquarters. Captain Haines sits across from us.

“It was conventional weaponry. Three car bombs detonating simultaneously at major support junctures brought down and imploded most of the complex. The car bombs were on the fourth sublevel, so those involved were trusted employees; support staff, not agents. That’s the only reason you got out alive. Captain Strohm is seriously injured, fortunately, he will survive.”

“All mission assignments are stable? No changes?” asks Guadian.

“Right, you are still a U.S. Federal employee and our agreements as to mutual cooperation on this project stand.”

“We have an apartment set up for you in old east LA. Considering Guadian’s ethnic background, this gives us the best fit as to being absorbed into the community.”

“What about me?”

“Well, first off, you will be reclusive. Guadian needs to mingle and get involved in the radical, anti Exart, MSSA and U.S. factions. You will be at the apartment collecting intel. It is fully equipped. You’ll be satisfied. Perhaps have a case of cabin fever.”

“Oh, I’m delirious already.”

“You’re not going to attempt any explanation of your relationship. Hell, it’s old California. What’s to explain?”

“Funding?”

“Always worried about your spending money, Rome. You won’t starve. Keep your purchases reasonable. We don’t want any attention focused on a weird spending gringo living with a local. At the same time and towards the same goals, don’t be cheap.”

“Oh, I won’t be saving you any money. Especially after sending me into the U.S. cold like that. I had a right to know the mission parameters.”

“Not until the last possible moment. I’m not going to apologize.”

“I don’t expect it sir. I assume we are driving”

“By necessity. Your cover wouldn’t be able to afford flight costs and obviously you can’t just fly in from ABCMK. Don’t push it though. No traffic stops and hold the hours down to twelve or less on the road daily. Take at least four days. I would prefer five. You won’t be taking the most direct route.”

“And sleeping?”

“You guys are poor tourists. You’ll stay in agency facilities through North Dakota and cross into MSSA in Montana. Then through Idaho, Oregon, into California from the north. You two are the outdoorsy types. We’ll mount a small canoe and some camping shit on the roof of the Tesla. Stay in whatever you find along the route”

“I’m not camping.”

“No, no. Just look outdoorsy. Get some jeans and flannel shirts. Just for the trip. You’ll be inside Ninety-five per-cent of the time once on point. Guadian knows how to dress. She lived it.”

“When?”

“Get a bit of sleep. We’ll quarter Guadian in the agent section. We’ll prep the car and get your clothes and incidentals. Let’s say you roll out fourteen-hundred Zulu.”

“OK, you know I don’t like that shit. So nine am. Fine”

I get up, heading out the door. This time Guadian follows me. Guess I get benefits on my own home turf. “I’ll check you in with Babcock for a room, overnight.
