Those passengers in the main salon had set the ornate tables ingloriously on their sides, turning them into makeshift ramparts. Hearing the gunfire all around outside, some were breathing heavily in the dark, adding more dread to the distress. Angel, hidden in a corner behind a few chairs, was crying. Proctor was holding her, trying his best to comfort her, but he knew she could probably feel his own trembling. Preston was pacing the room. Milton, Lionel Harrison, Kwong and Liang sat on the floor a few feet away behind the table.

The Asian couple had faced dangers before, yet not as outnumbered or outgunned. Kwong was annoyed, and had said nothing since the chief steward had left. He’d let Preston guide them in the creation of their bulwark, but to Kwong it was no more than their version of Little Bighorn. Do not look for a sanctuary in anyone except yourself, Buddha had said. Believing that staying was an imminent death sentence, Kwong leaned over and whispered something in Mandarin to Lily. She whispered back.

Preston turned in the dark. “What are you saying?” he asked.

Kwong had been discussing to Liang their own plan of action, but he said politely, “I was telling Ms. Liang that it sounds like the crew needs help, and she agreed.”

“No!” Milton immediately objected with a hoarse whisper. “You have to stay here! You can’t leave us! We’d be defenseless!” He spoke the words like he was performing a Shakespearean tragedy.

Kwong silently smirked at the British actor. Good thing we took back Hong Kong. Although tempted to just shoot them all, he decided instead to give the sheep a fighting chance against the wolves. “Preston,” he called.

“What do you want, Kwong?” Preston’s hostile tone cut through the darkness. “To hear me beg you to stay because you have a gun? I’d rather have these pirates shoot me first.”

“Not me!” Proctor said.

Kwong laughed without cynicism. “I thought that’s what you might say, Preston. You pull no punches. So, I’m going to leave you in charge, with a gift.” He shined his cell phone’s light on the gun in his hand, and extended the grip toward Preston.

“You can’t be serious?” Preston responded. “You’re giving me your gun?”

“I’ve heard you’ve used one before.”

“All right. I’ll play your game.” Preston grabbed the gun. “So how are you and your lady friend going to help the crew now?”

Kwong shook his head. “So narrow-minded and short focused. ‘Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence, and face your future without fear.’”

Preston scoffed. “You and your Asian philosophies.”

“Would you prefer: ‘Do what you have to do, to do what you want to do.’?”

“Enough with the Buddha.”

“That was Denzel Washington.” Kwong turned to Liang. “Let’s go.”

“You’re insane! You’ll both be killed!” Milton said.

Kwong merely smiled, gently grasped Liang’s hand, and the two of them slipped around the barricade. “Preston, I wish you all the best.”

“Go to hell,” grumbled Preston as the pair left through the door they had come through, leaving the other five passengers to their fate.
