“Wait, I hear something.” Jake walked closer to the structure and put his ear against the siding.

Wes and Amber did the same.

“It sounds like water dripping into a pool,” Amber said.

“I bet it’s a springhouse!” Jake tried to peer between the cracks in the wood siding. “The pioneers would build these around springs to keep animals and leaves and stuff from ruining the water.” He turned to face Wes and Amber. “This must be the spring!”

The three turned around to study the landscape. “I wonder if that could be it?” Amber pointed to a copse of pine trees. “It’s all covered with trees, but it looks like a rock outcrop like the book described.”

They hiked into the trees and scrambled up the rocks, finding their way to the top.

“Wow, you can see forever up here.” Jake turned to the west and pointed. “And look, there’s the Ute Trail right down there.”

Amber and Wes looked to where Jake was pointing and spotted a hiker traveling along the path.

“This would be the perfect place if you were planning a surprise attack.” Wes walked over to the edge. “I bet the Apaches piled up rocks right here, laid down behind them, and waited.”

“But where do we find the clue?” Amber asked. “I mean, this place is pretty big.”

“Maybe it’s like the bottle–” Wes scanned the broad stone surface– “hidden inside a crack in the rocks somewhere.”

“Let’s spread out and look,” Jake said. “I’ll take this side of the outcrop. Amber, you take the middle. And, Wes, you take the far side over there.”

For about twenty minutes, they searched the entire face of the rock but found nothing.

“What if we explore around the base of it?” Amber suggested. “There’s probably more cracks and holes down there.”

They scrambled down and began walking around the foot of the Apache Fort. Then, on the north side, on the flat face of one of its cliffs, something came into view.

“Guys, I found something!” Amber yelled. “Come over here! There’s writing.”
