Chapter 1

All preparations for the gala dinner were completed. The entire household was in uproar. So Sarah decided to come out for a walk to get some fresh air and some calm away from the high strung nerves of the entire Peterson household.

The gala dinner at the Peterson Mansion was the most famous annual event of Shadow Island Massachusetts. Also called the Peterson Island, this little piece of land, situated offshore the Boston Bay and accessible only by the sea, was a small community with a population of around five hundred.

Sarah worked as personal secretary to Everdene Peterson, the seventy five year old widow of the late James Peterson. Sarah had been born on Shadow Island and it was the only house she had ever known. After the death of her mother, Everdene Peterson’s former secretary, Everdene had taken Sarah under her wings, given her an education, a job and a place to live on an island Sarah considered as heaven on earth. This was the only home she had ever known. She belonged here more than even Everdene’s own children.

Everdene and James had had three sons and one daughter. They lost all three sons during the war and what was now left of their linage was their daughter Aïsha Tule, her son Dogus Peterson and her daughter Lyra Tule.

Dogus was born when Aïsha was seventeen. Just out of college she had fallen in love with a man twice her age. He was the head librarian of the Peterson Island public library. At forty he had died of a heart condition without ever knowing that his girlfriend was pregnant. So her first child was named Peterson.

Later Aïsha finished college, and obtained a higher studies diploma in fashion designing. She worked for years in Paris while her son Dogus was being brought up by her parents. There she met Arnold Tule, a famous jewelry designer of the nouvelle vague movement and they fell in love. From that marriage was born her daughter Lyra. When Lyra was three her parents divorced and mother and daughter shifted to Boston to be near the rest of their family.

When they grew up, Dogus and Lyra chose to live in Carlisle Boston. Dogus was an extremely coveted private detective while his sister studied art at the University of Boston. Brother and sister loved each other dearly and looked out for each other. Aïsha Tule was now a fashion designer who roamed the world secure in the feeling that her babies would always take care of each other. And they did.

While Sarah was thinking about Abigail Peterson’s grandchildren she heard a honking behind and saw the all too familiar bike of the Shadow Island PD coming to a stop a few feet ahead of her. The biker took off his helmet and the face of Detective Marcus smiled at her. Even thinking of Marcus gave Sarah the creeps.

They had gone to high school together. Marcus had invited Sarah to go with him for their prom. Sarah had refused, then and many times since then.
