CHAPTER 5 AN OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD IDEA

“HAUNTED? Well, at least you’re thinking big,” Aisha said. She was sitting on my bedroom floor folding paper from my new origami kit. But my unexpected announcement about the aquarium had made her stop.

“I mean, why not? I think my grandma’s attic is haunted, too,” she admitted. “But just tell me again how your brain got there?”

“Okay, hear me out,” I answered. “My new job is to be a good science reporter for the aquarium. That means I’m supposed to report on the most interesting news, right? So what’s the most interesting thing going on at the aquarium right now?”

“The power-outage issue,” Aisha said.

“Exactly,” I agreed. “So I started thinking about what we know about the problem. And it’s always the same pattern. The electricians work all day, checking every line, and everything seems fine. Then the aquarium closes for the night and something happens. Always after dark when everyone’s gone home.”

“So just because it happens at night, you think a ghost is doing it?” Aisha asked as she picked up the origami paper again.

“No! But it got me thinking. Maybe the electricians at the aquarium are like the divers in the Solomon Islands,” I replied.

“Where you going with this?” Aisha asked.

Ugh. Why doesn’t she see the connection?

“Think about HOW the divers discovered the flashlight fish,” I said with growing excitement. “They had no idea that those cool fish were swimming around in huge schools, because they were looking for them in the wrong way. What if the same thing is happening at the aquarium? What if there’s something nobody can see because they don’t know how to look for it? Something hidden in plain sight, like the flashlight fish were?”

Now, Aisha had a thoughtful look on her face.

“Okay, I hear ya,” she said. “So you’re saying just because the electricians don’t see a ghost, it doesn’t mean there isn’t one there. Because maybe they aren’t looking for it in the right way. But the aquarium has security cameras on all the time. Even if the electricians couldn’t find it during the day, don’t you think someone would’ve noticed a ghost floating around at night?”

I was prepared for this question.

“But maybe the aquarium’s cameras are like the divers’ underwater lights,” I persisted. “Remember what happened when those lights were on? The flashlight fish hid. So maybe the ghost does the same thing with the aquarium cameras. And it just knows how to avoid them.”

Aisha gave me her raised-eyebrow look.

“There’s something else,” I added. “I did some research on the aquarium just to see how old the electrical system was. And you’ll never believe what I found out.”

I paused for a minute to gather my thoughts. This next point was important.

“When the aquarium was built,” I continued in a hushed voice, “they had to stop digging because the workers discovered some graves.”

“Graves? As in dead bodies?” Aisha asked. I suddenly had her full attention again.

“Yes,” I rushed ahead while I had her. “It stopped construction for weeks.
