“Let’s go over this once more,” said Alice, feeling the tip of the master key in her pocket as they stood in Charlie’s lift that evening. “Sonny and Miriam will hang around the A Deck passageway just before seven o’clock, to confirm the Blakes leave their cabin for dinner.”

“Then, while Alice is searching the cabin for evidence linking Mr Blake to Joseph and a plot to sabotage the race, Miriam and Sonny will keep watch at either end of the passageway,” said Charlie. His face fell a little. “I wish I could help too.”

“You are helping,” said Alice, pulling the pale grey stewardess uniform from the bag she had brought with her. “You’ve provided us with the perfect meeting place to discuss this mystery and a very important and top-secret changing room service.”

Charlie grinned as Alice shrugged the uniform on over her dress.

Miriam quickly helped Alice do up the buttons and fix the starched white hat with hairpins, while Alice adjusted the collar and cuffs.

“Well?” Alice said, doing a twirl.

“It’s a little…big,” said Sonny.

Alice glanced down and grimaced. He was right. The sleeves were too long, and the skirt almost reached the tops of her sandals. Perhaps it would help to disguise her scuffed shoes, which looked a little out of place.

“It will do,” said Miriam, giving Alice a firm smile.

“Here, I’ll look after your bag,” said Charlie, opening a panel in the lift and stuffing it inside.

“Remember what happened to Joseph – this could be dangerous. If the Blakes do come back, I’ll walk past their cabin and say very loudly, ‘Terrible weather outside.’ That’s the signal you must leave straight away,” said Sonny, who was looking more anxious by the second.

“Don’t worry, Sonny. I know we’re breaking lots of rules this evening, but I’ve a feeling this will all work out just fine,” said Alice, trying to quell the churning in her stomach and dearly hoping she was right.
