And the other thing that kept going around his head was that sign.

Granby Woods. 11. 21.

What did it mean? Was it a meeting or something? 11. 21. That could be a date. But if so, it could only be the 21st of November – and this was August. He glanced at his watch. August 11, actually. Wait a minute! What if that’s what it meant? The eleventh day of this month… today.

Then what did 21 mean? He suddenly heard Ben again, saying: ‘On duty at fourteen hundred hours!’ Well… 21 could mean twenty one hundred hours. Nine in the evening.

Joe sat up. If it was a meeting, it would be tonight. Tonight at nine in Granby Woods. Maybe the sign was up there for other people to read – people who knew the code. So… would that nasty long-haired guy be going out tonight? If so, there might not be anyone else around in that bungalow. It might be safe to go back there and sniff around with Willow; see if they could find whatever was whimpering; maybe rescue it!

Joe sighed and lay back down again. Come on! He told himself. You’re not going to go running around with Willow late at night! That’s stupid. Just… tell Ben! Yes. That was the thing to do. Tell Ben.

But… how could he get Ben’s number? He could ask Mum but she would want to know why. Telling her that he and Willow wanted to rescue some mystery whimpering creature from a stranger’s bungalow was going to throw up a whole load of other questions. Joe wracked his brains for any other believable reason why he might want to phone Ben. He couldn’t think of a thing.

Downstairs the landline phone rang. Joe listened in as Mum took the call. ‘Oh… that’s great,’ she said. ‘Well… that’s not a bad offer. OK. Well… let me think it over and call you back in the morning.’

He heard the click as she put down the phone. Then there was a small pause. Then she called up to him, softly: ‘Joe… I think we’ve sold the house.’
