declared his deep distress and grief

sadly then did people give him

the water-offering of respect.(54)

Drunk with wine, when she did see

on me scratches her hands had made,

she got jealous, began to leave;

‘Where are you going?’ I then said,

holding that girl’s garment sash,

but, face turned away, she cried:

‘Let me go! O let me go!’

as her lips throbbed angrily,

what she said, I can’t forget.(55)
