âI told each of them that itâs been a couple of years since Iâve been with a man,â Danielle said as I waved at the server for the check. âThey told me I should take you home with me tonight and keep you until morning, if thatâs alright with you.â She smiled as if sheâd just asked me to pass the salt.
âI donât know what to say, Danielle,â I finally managed. She smiled again. She looked delighted. I know I was.
âSay yes,â she said with a semi-serious tone that was clearly a put-on.
âYes,â I said solemnly.
We both laughed the nervous laugh of two people who had just agreed to see each other naked. I had no idea I was still susceptible to such feelings.
Once we had made our intentions clear, however, everything between us slowed down. I felt as though I was swimming in syrup, or some sort of reality-warp from a Christopher Nolan movie, more Inception than Oppenheimer. I also felt way less pressure than I should have. Iâd clearly had my sexual prowess extolled, by three beautiful women, no less. How could I possibly live up to Danielle's expectations, the voice in the back of my head kept shouting. This was going to end in disaster, it insisted. Danger, Will Robinson! Danger!
Once again, I ignored the voice in my head. I was half-tempted to order dessert just to show how insanely cool I thought I was but that would have been too much, I decided but just barely. I handed my credit card to the server without bothering to look at the check and rose to help Danielle with her chair. When the server said sheâd be back as quickly as possible, I told her to just add thirty percent for her tip and Iâd come back for my card in the morning. She looked at me as if Iâd sprouted another head but I caught a glimpse of a smile on Danielleâs lips she didnât mean for me to see, and I knew Iâd done the right thing.
I was on a roll that wouldnât quit.
I offered Danielle my arm and she smiled once again as she took it. I walked her out the door of the restaurant and down the crowded sidewalk without a word between us. I could do this, I told myself. I would do this.
We arrived at her building and she keyed us in. We rode the elevator in continued silence and I almost became uncomfortable with the lack of communication but it felt right so I went with it. She said nothing as I walked her to the door of her apartment. She didnât invite me in, she just handed me the keys with the correct one separated in her hand. I unlocked the door and pushed it open for her â clearly this woman was into old-fashioned manners, or gallantry or whatever it was we were doing. She was good. I was good. We were good.
âWould you like something to drink?â she asked once we were inside and the door was closed and locked.
