We decided to have Jackie and Marcella go back to the restaurant near the end of the brunch to talk to Danielle and see if she wanted to come to the apartment if only just to talk. We further decided to be open and honest with her once we got a feel for how interested she might be in being with us.

With all of us.

“I can’t believe how nervous I am,” Bettie said to me as we waited in the living room. I’d allowed Bettie to get dressed – having her sitting naked in the living room when Danielle arrived just seemed too aggressive, and weird – and she put the same clothes on that she’d worn to brunch. “And it feels strange being dressed, if you can believe it.” She looked at me and smiled shyly.

“You look great, though,” I told her and I meant it. Bettie has come into her own since we got married. She seemed happier and more confident, putting aside our session after lunch. I haven’t pressed her about it and doing so just before Jackie and Marcella arrived, hopefully with Danielle in tow seemed like precisely the wrong time to do it so I kept quiet. But I was going to ask her about it soon enough.

“You look good, too,” Bettie said to me and I thought I heard a bit of doubt in her voice.

“Are you okay with this, Bettie? Now that the others aren’t here, were you being completely honest with us?”

She stared at me for a long moment. “Yes, I am okay with it, really. I like watching you with Jackie and Marcella and the thought of you making love to Danielle is really exciting. I’m looking forward to it, if she’s interested.”

“And you’re not just saying that because it’s what I want, Betts?” I asked with a gentle smile. “I know it’s a fine line, after all.”

“I know that too and I’ve thought about it but I don’t think that’s what’s going on here. I want you to be happy, Oliver, and if that means you get to fuck other women, I’m cool with it. I really am. I guess sharing you with Jackie and Marcella has prepped me for the idea but I’m okay with it.” She smiled at me. “I almost feel like I’m giving you the gift of my approval and that feels wonderful.”

I studied her closely in a futile attempt to read her mind but she looked completely sincere so I decided to take her word for it when my phone dinged with an incoming text. I looked at the screen and told Bettie that Danielle was indeed coming over. I watched her react to the news and she still seemed genuinely pleased. I tried to ignore the fact that she was doing exactly what I wanted her to do and that I might have been kidding myself.

We sat in silence for the time it took for Jackie and Marcella to make the trip back to the apartment with Danielle in tow.
