The next morning,

when I reach the front steps

of Pine Hill Elementary, Daniel is waiting

with Jerry, Butch, Bobby, and Harold.

Lila stands nearby, blinking, her head

tilted to catch every word.

“You’ll pay.” Daniel hisses, his finger

almost poking my nose. The boys behind him

step closer, making Daniel look taller,

like a long mirror in a funhouse.

“Mr. Preston called my father last night,”

he says. “It better not happen again.”

“What?” Lila mouths, her lips open

with silent questions I can’t answer until

the bell rings and the bullies run to the door.

“Did you tattle?” Lila asks. “To who?”

When I tell her, she grabs my hands.

“This could be bad,” she says. “It could

be bad.”

And I know she’s right.
