Stepping out of the SUV, when we arrive home, feels like a boulder has been lifted from my chest. I’ve been agonizing over this event for days, and now that I’ve seen Mila with my own eyes, it makes it easier to keep the battle going. I watch as the guys unload their stuff and make plans for who is driving to get the rig and move the vehicle. I’m still in awe that I’m becoming part of this group.

“Hey, uh, guys,” I call to them, and all three heads turn to me. My cheeks flush. “I just wanted to say thanks. For being there and well, ya know,” I shrug, and look away, so more tears don’t fall. My throat already hurts from earlier.

Kai swoops in, before I can blink, and wraps me in a hug, his arms locked around my shoulders. “You did good, Gossip Girl,” he tells me, using that damn nickname that I’m slowly starting to like. I smile into his chest.

He pulls away and an uncertain looking Silas approaches me. His hand lands on my shoulder where he gently pats it. I laugh and grab his shirt, pulling him into an even more awkward side hug. “Don’t go all soft on me okay, Si?” I joke, and he chuckles, before stepping out of my embrace.

My eyes slide over to Ciaran, who is watching the exchange with relief, while, at the same time, looking territorial. “Can I ride with you to Rogue?”

He nods, and I follow him over to his truck. My stomach growls, and I realize we haven’t eaten since this morning. “Care if we pick something up to eat?”

Ciaran smirks. “I’m hungry, too.”

He drives us into town, and we stop at a fast food drive-thru, grabbing burgers, fries and Cokes. Once my stomach is full, I’m feeling braver about the discussion I need to have with Ciaran. He pulls into Rogue and goes to shut the truck off, but I halt his hand. “Can we talk quick?” He sits back, eyes focused on me in response.

“I know I’m not officially an employee yet, and there will be things you can’t tell me, but if it has to do with me or Mila or my dad, I need to know, Ciaran. My mind freaks out when you guys start playing with bullets and acting like it’s not dangerous. Maybe you can’t tell me everything, that’s fine, I get it, but please don’t lie about it either. Nothing good ever happens when we keep things from each other. I love you, and I don’t want to lose you,” I explain, purging all my feelings. I want to keep moving forward with Ci, and I can’t take secrets and lying, even it’s for my own protection. I’m not that girl.

He glances out the window, and I feel him starting to pull away from me. My heart jumps into my throat, but I hold my ground. “I don’t think you understand.” He clears his throat, and my nails dig into my palms, while I wait for him to continue.
