A terrible thing happened not long after he tore down the curtains. Dad stopped to talk to someone when he and Mike were walking. Dad always told Mike when to cross the street. Mike did a bad thing. He didn’t stop and look both ways, twice. He likes to chase squirrels and probably saw one. He ran in front of a truck. That was Mike’s last day living with us.

Dad felt awful. Wanting to make me feel better he said, “I couldn’t picture Mike as an old dog lying around sleeping all day. He had a wonderful six years with us. That would be about forty two years’ time in a dog’s life. You will always remember to look both ways twice, before you cross a street. That was your lesson from Mike.”

I wanted to make dad feel better. I said, “I know Mike was sorry for hurting Grandma, tearing down the curtains, and knocking off the neighbor lady’s hat. He just couldn’t say I’m sorry, all he could do was make a funny sound in his throat. He really wasn’t one of us.”
