Chapter fourteen

Mia

“Wait… what happened?” Amanda asked on the other end of the phone. It was on speaker, so her confused voice echoed in my empty car. I didn’t even want the radio on because it was too distracting, and driving to Amanda’s house right then required all my focus.

“I said, I took the day off of work and, with Enzo in school, I need to have a girl’s day full of day-drinking and sisterly help. I’m not telling you what happened on purpose, not yet, because there’s … it’s… well, it’s huge, okay?” I said, slowing down for the red light I was approaching. I could multitask, even if the whole time I was telling my brain not to think about certain things.

I hadn’t gotten any sleep. My mind was reeling, and it hadn’t stopped since Gunnar, I mean Diego, walked through my front door.

Was this actually happening or was I dreaming? Was it a trick and Amanda was just very good at it? No, it couldn’t have been a setup, at least not by her. She hadn’t known some of the things Diego had said, so it had to be him, but seriously?

Focus, Mia, focus.

“Okay, I’ll tell my boss I’m not signing on to my computer today…” Amanda responded. “I think I have like three weeks of sick time saved anyway. Do you want wine or vodka?”

“Both,” I told her, and she whistled.

“Wow… this must be huge… wait... did Derek propose?” Her voice got high and all excited, the way it does when she thinks she is getting epically good news. “Am I going to get to be a bridesmaid? Please don’t pick out something ugly…. My cousin had me wear this orange creamsicle-looking thing—”

“No,” I said, cutting her off. “Derek didn’t propose. Look, I need to concentrate on driving… I’ll see you in about ten minutes.”

“Sure, I’ll be waiting.”

I think it actually only took me five minutes, which meant I had been going way too fast. Lucky for me, I didn’t get pulled over. I was definitely going to have to order a taxi home or something after this because I wasn’t going to be in any state to drive. Hopefully, I would sober up enough to make Enzo dinner, but if I didn’t, there were a few mini pizzas in the freezer that he could cook himself in the toaster oven. Sometimes it was awesome to have such an independent, self-sufficient kid.

I stepped out of the car, and before I was even at the front door, Amanda opened it, a glass of white wine in her hand. I downed it when she handed it to me, then handed her back the glass. She stepped back, looking at me with wide eyes and her mouth open, gaping.

“Damn, this must be big… Let's go to the kitchen and get you another glass,” she suggested, leading me from the foyer into the giant room that was the kitchen, dining room, and living room. She had an open-concept layout that I was always jealous of.
