Liesl

“Idon’t know if I can do this. I haven’t been on skates since Robbie was in grade school. I’m probably going to fall and break a hip or something.”

I finished tying my laces and stood up, reaching out my hand. “Come on, old lady. I promise I’ll catch you if you fall.”

The fact that Teri’s face cleared as she took my hand meant a lot. I’d gained a lot of confidence – or re-gained it I guess – since I started dating my temporary roommate. We were a good balance for each other, with each of us having our own quirks and insecurities that were different from the other person. Where one of us was weaker, the other was stronger, and together that made us feel solid. Invincible.

But the clock was ticking. Robbie would be back home in a few weeks, and I knew as well as Teri that there was no way she’d be okay with me dating her mother. And we were dating. At first I thought we’d just mess around at her house and get the sex part out of our system, but as time went by we’d veered into girlfriend territory. Making dinner together. Going for hikes. Snuggling on the couch while watching TV. Kissing amongst the plants when we were working on the roof garden.

And now, a roller skate date. I have no idea why I’d thought of it, but I knew it was going to be fun. If I could get Teri out onto the rink.

I threaded my fingers through hers and stepped out onto the smooth wood, pulling her forward until we were lined up from hip to hip, then I pushed off, giving her no choice but to skate in order to keep up with me.

This place had been around since the nineteen forties, and generations of kids had attended skate parties here. Roller rinks weren’t as cool as they used to be, but they were still fun.

As we circled the rink, Teri gradually relaxed, moving more confidently on her skates. I kept a hold of her hand – because I could – and as we skated we talked. That was the surprising thing about us, despite our age gap and very different jobs, we could talk for hours without running out of things to say.

“Did your parents take you skating when you were a kid?” she asked.

I shook my head, then realized she couldn’t see me since her eyes were glued to the ground. “No, they didn’t have a lot of interest in me. They did the absolute least they could do to keep me alive.”

“That sounds hard.”

“It was. I was an oops baby. My brothers were in high school when my mom got pregnant with me. I guess she thought she was in menopause, but she wasn’t.”

“That happens a lot,” Teri said.

“Yeah, I’ve heard that. They never had much use for me, but then they found out I was gay right before I went to college. I never officially came
