CHAPTER 5

* * *

He couldn’t sleep that night—the basement scene kept replaying in his mind. Why had his father appeared? Why did he vanish so completely? Were hallucinations a sign of some brain disorder? Perhaps he was having a stroke. Did he dare mention this to Sophie, or would she be so worried that she’d immediately insist that he see a doctor?

“What’s wrong?” she murmured. “You’ve been tossing and turning for hours.”

“I don’t know—I’m just restless.”

“Do you want to talk about it?” she said softly, rubbing his back.

“No.”

She was quiet for a moment. “Well, then, could you take a pill or something? You’re keeping me up, too, and I’ve got a big day tomorrow.”

He got up, swallowed an Ambien, and lay down on the couch.

He wished he could tell her about the trip to Michigan, about all the memories and the strange daydream he’d had about his father, but he was afraid. It all sounded too crazy. She’d probably want him to start seeing a therapist.

He thought about going back in and holding her, usually an antidote to his sleeplessness, but he didn’t want to disturb her again.

The couch was itchy right through the sheet he’d thrown over it. Worse, it was next door to his son’s room, so he was privy to the boy’s little snores and cries of what sounded like nightmares; Ryan had probably ruined him already.

All night he kept thinking about his strange experience with Robert—what it was and what it meant. And even more, how weakly he had reacted to this first chance of talking to him—even a fantasy version of him—after all these years. Why hadn’t he challenged him immediately about why he’d left the family? Why hadn’t he asked how he planned to compensate his mother for her years of pain and loss?

The more he thought of it, the more he burned with outrage and regret. He should have slugged him right there and then; he should have dragged him in to see Logan; he should have …

Without meaning to, he dropped off to sleep.
