she never let you see

thinking they hung ugly from early

childbearing

“not flawless

like yours,” she said,

while you soaked

in your evening bath

with book in hand,

as she painted, brushed, sprayed herself

for men whom she demanded at 2 a.m.

they make love to her this way and that.

On the other side of the wall she whispered,

“Down there, I want your tongue down there.”

Yet you saw her eyes when

you entered a room, how she caught

her breath. That woman gave you

to her brother one drunken night,

who took you to a hotel.
