Oh No!

Danielle ran down the cement steps in front of Marcie’s house, calling Echo’s name in a panic.

“Echo! Echo come!”

She could not think of where her dog might be. They had only taken a few walks in the new neighborhood. Where would Echo go? Danielle started to walk faster and call Echo faster and louder.

“Echo, Echo, Echo.”

She began to run and clap her hands, “Echo, Echo, Echo, Echo.”

But there was no dog in sight, not between houses, not across the street.

The street! Oh no! What if Echo went down the hill toward the BIG street with all those cars zooming past!

Tears started to roll down Danielle’s face as she pumped her arms back and forth to run faster, cover more ground, “Eccc-ho, Eccc-oooo!”

The purple unicorn blurred into streaks running down her cheek and neck. Behind her, she heard Marcie and her dad calling Echo’s name too. Their calls were getting fainter as they moved toward the school.

Danielle reached her Mama who was standing in front of their house. “Danielle! Crying won’t help find Echo.”

“I, I didn’t see her anywhere and” Dani sniffled, “and she didn’t come, come when I called. Marcie and her dad are looking too.”

“Yes, I see them,” Mama said. “Let’s go this way, keep calling her.”

They walked down the sidewalk toward the corner, Danielle calling her dog and not crying so much anymore.

A man was sitting on the porch at the house on the corner, “Are you looking for a dog? A black and white hairy dog? One of those husky kinda dogs?”

“Yes, yes. Have you seen her?” Mama asked.

“I did, she came right up to me, very friendly. She didn’t have any identification tags on, just a gold collar, so I called Animal Control. They came and picked her up, took her away.”
