CHAPTER 9

CANE

“There’s nothing to explain. Let it go,” I said for the umpteenth time.

It was a Sunday evening, and Tristan and I had decided to unwind at the Rusty Anchor after we bumped into each other at Ariel’s house coincidentally. Tristan raised his eyebrow, sipping his beer with a small smile gracing his lips.

“I don’t even understand why I’m letting you quiz me. I should be the one asking you the questions here.”

He scoffed.

“And how exactly do you mean? You of all people know I’m an open book, Blackwood. I don’t hide behind my feelings.”

I nodded with a smile on my face.

“Touché, Tristan. Way to rub it in.”

“If you’re interested in knowing what’s going on between Regina and I, we are just friends and I enjoy her company a lot. When it morphs into something bigger, I will let her know, and then you’ll be next to know.”

“How did you two even meet anyway? Of all people, you had to make friends with Ariel’s cousin.”

“In my defense, I had no idea she was related to your girl until the other night. We met at a bar,” he finished.

I ignored the fact that he had referred to Ariel as my girl because Tristan had a habit of pushing my buttons.

“Now answer me, have you finally decided on what to do concerning your office romance?” Tristan asked, wriggling his brows.

“Get the hell away from me, Tristan,” I groaned as he laughed.

I sat at my desk in my office as I flipped through different folders and documents on my computer screen. I yawned and leaned back in my chair, loosening my tie.

I felt like I was being suffocated with this tie around my neck, but I didn’t think it was the tie making me feel like this. I was probably just under too much stress, and it was telling.

I looked at the papers that were spread out in front of me, but my mind was far from the quarterly reports and business deals that typically occupied my thoughts. No, my mind was currently stuck on the awkward tension that had settled between Ariel and me ever since that unexpected kiss.

And the almost kiss that never happened in my car. This thing between Ariel and I was becoming more, and no matter how I tried to run away from this, it still didn’t change the fact that I was attracted to Ariel. But that didn’t mean I was going to jeopardize our healthy work relationship. I wasn’t sure I was willing to give Ariel what she wanted from me, and I couldn’t even saddle her with the responsibility of being a mother at this age. I knew Lizbeth had a soft spot for her, but it would be too hurtful if Ariel ever left. That would break not just my daughter but me too.

Being in the business industry for a few years now has taught me some life-changing lessons. I’ve had my fair share of challenges and high-pressure situations. But none of them compared to this newfound awkwardness with Ariel.
