Chapter Twenty-One
Iâd never taken a second to ask Bridget about Tom, and now I wished I had. All of this would have come out, and I wouldnât have tripped over Huckabeeâs fake carrot. I sat in my car, outside of the Kingsâ home, processing what Iâd just learned.
Tom was a man under many pressures, just like his wife. Whether they realized it or not, they were both battling this multi-tentacled beast that was their life. Together and apart. And I was no closer to understanding why they even had Carrie on their suspect radar. It was driving me mad.
The rattail comb had been hers.
Doesnât mean she killed Liza. But she could have.
Carrie said sheâd left the salon to go home, to prepare for her date night with Tom, who didnât show until hours later. She had no alibi after leaving the salon.
Again, doesnât mean she killed Liza. But she could have.
So far, it was all so circumstantial, and I just had to believe that Carrie would be cleared of any wrongdoing.
My next thought hit me square in the face.
Had Carrie ever thought her husband and Liza were having an affairâeven for one minute? And had that one minute been when sheâd plunged a rattail comb into her friendâs eyeball, killing her?
Had the detectives asked Carrie about this?
I didnât know, thanks to the police chiefâs irritating non-answers, spins, and overall unwillingness to play nice and share.
I sure wasnât going to ask for his input again.
Iâd do it myself.
âSloane, Sloane!â Maddieâs voice broke through my theorizing. I fumbled for the phone, whipped it out of my pocket, and said, âWeâre good. Weâre good.â
âIâm glad youâre okay. Now get back here pronto. I got stuff to share.â
âWill do. I need to make one more phone call, then Iâm headed in your direction. See you in thirty minutes.â
