Chapter 13

The completion of her home wasn’t a big event, mainly attended only by the construction workers who had been there since day one, then the three men who got it running in the first place. As a farewell, Ade treated the workers to lunch and issued many praises for their good work. The night ended with the three men moving out of her house, deeming it inappropriate to stay in the space while she was officially residing there.

She tried to be understanding of their decision but couldn’t help the disappointment that her invitation had been rejected in the politest of manners: by not saying no outright and moving on casually. She tried to move on, too, tucking it at the back of her mind as she had plenty of things to stay preoccupied with.

The first few days were spent admiring the house, from the ivory and marble in every room to the columns, arches, and high ceilings that swirled with graceful beams before forming into a massive circular spot at the grand hall. Chandeliers glinted gold, the crystals resembling diamonds. When her furniture she special ordered arrived, she kept busy arranging and rearranging, when finally things started to come together. The choice to decorate this place different from her original castle was deliberate, wanting the same grand feel but not even remotely resembling the other.

The task was physically daunting at first, but forming a daily goal turned it into a habit, and soon she was moving items effortlessly. Then there was nothing more to move, so she switched back to admiring the pretty vases and comfortable couches before making use of the kitchen and deciding to cook.

That was a disaster.

“By the goddess!” she yelled, waving her arms and willing the oven to stop smoking with her magic. That didn’t work. She kicked it, hissed when it hissed, and eventually found the plug. Stressed, Ade scowled at the oven, left it alone, and tinkered with the induction stove next. When the stew didn’t burn, she crowed and felt like the most accomplished non-human on Earth.

She wandered to the back, basking in the sunlight glittering from the clear blue pool, then ambling to the guest house. Its emptiness pierced something in her chest, so she backed away and sat on a lounge chair.

Ade counted the days, surmised it hadn’t even been five days since her move and there was still more to buy, like books to fill the study room and clothes to hang in the walk-in closet. Maybe some weapons for the weapons room, though she didn’t think that was a priority now. The planning came to a halt when it dawned that she wasn’t even looking forward to it.

A bird chirped somewhere. Loneliness gripped her until her insides felt hollow, drawing a panic at the somber understanding that this was going to be her life from now on. She didn’t dwell on it for long, refusing to let it overtake her positive drive. Pride also coated her, so she didn’t pick up the phone, didn’t ask them again.
