Chapter 13

Piper blinked her eyes open to a row of blinding white lights that sat directly above her head before shielding her face and quickly closing them back again. Turning her head slightly, Piper swallowed and then tried opening her eyes again. This time she was able to keep them open long enough and get a bird’s eye view of her surroundings. Immediately, she could tell that she was in a hospital. While continuing to get a better scope of her room, she saw a host of buttons with little pictures above them on railing of the inside of her bed.

Squinting, she began browsing all of the buttons when she noticed one that controlled the light. Wincing, Piper carefully raised her right arm and pressed the button with the light bulb drawn on it. Instantly, relief washed over her as the only light that now remained was a small corner of natural sunlight playing peekaboo with the blinds. Looking toward the panel of buttons again, Piper found and pressed the arrow up to raise her bed. Just as she was repositioning herself, someone opened her room door and walked inside.

When a man dressed in all black closed the door behind him and slid his hand in his pocket, fear froze her in place. She could hear her heart pounding in her ears as he came closer, and when he pulled his hand out of his pocket, Piper found her voice and screamed as loud as she could.

“Helppppppp! Somebody help me. Please.”

The man rushed toward her just as the door opened again, and a doctor and nurse rushed inside.

“Hey, it's okay. You're safe now,” the man said as the nurse turned on the blinding light.

“Ma’am, can you tell me your name?” the doctor asked as he and the nurse checked her vitals and bandages, which she just now noticed were covering her legs, stomach, chest, and arms.

“Ma'am, what is your name?”

“Piper.”

Noticing how raspy her voice was, the strange man, who now stood at her feet, rushed to the side of her bed, grabbed a cup of ice water from her food table, and handed it to her. Cautiously, Piper took the cup and drank the water down fast as she watched the stranger stare back at her.

“Piper, what is your last name?” the doctor asked.

“Bell, Piper Bell.”

“Do you know what happened to you and how you got to the ER?”

“All I remember is being kidnapped from my home and behind held hostage.”

“All right, the police will be up in a bit to speak with you, and you too Mr. Sanford. In the meantime, if you need anything, please don't hesitate to call down to the nurse’s station, and if they can't help, have them page me or whatever doctor is on call. Kandice here is your personal nurse; she's about to run and get some pain medicine and a few other things for you.”

“Okay I will. Thank you.”

“Not a problem.”

After the doctor and nurse left the room, Piper turned back to the strange man, and for the first time since he was standing there, took him in.
