CHAPTER SIX

It was two days later and the first pearly touches of dawn began to touch the Eastern sky.

From the window seat in her bedroom, Martina sat gazing out towards the little Kent village of Preston Bailey, watching as birds started hopping around in the garden and the stars faded in the clear sky.

It was going to be yet another beautiful day, one of many in this long hot June.

Martina sighed and leant out of the open window to catch a spray of the yellow roses that grew in abundance along the front of her home.

Her long fair hair was loose, cascading down across her shoulders. She pulled her pale blue wrap closer around her. The sun was not yet up and dew was still present.

She had been awake for an hour now, sleeping had proved difficult these last two days.

All Martina could think about was the Earl and the expression that she had seen in his eyes.

What would have happened if she had not run away from him outside the maze at Fox Priory?

Would he have kissed her?

But surely not! She was his employee, paid to give piano lessons to his sister. She could not believe that the Earl was the type of man to dally with one of his staff.

And yet she was woman enough to realise that he had looked at her as a man looks at a woman he is attracted to, be he an Earl or a farm boy.

It was all very confusing.

All she knew for sure was that her feelings for the Earl were changing every time they met.

But just how horribly embarrassing it would be if he read on her face how she felt about him!

No, from now on she realised that she had to be careful to keep all her emotions well under control.

A rumbling sound from the road made her start out of her dreams.

A long line of carts and wagons were making their way through the village.

The Fair had arrived in Preston Bailey!

‘Oh, Lily will be so pleased,’ Martina murmured to herself and leant out of the window even further to watch the bright red and blue caravans rumble past on their high wheels, pulled by patient horses.

A dark haired boy was driving a caravan painted in green and yellow and he raised his whip to Martina as he passed and grinned cheekily.

With a stifled cry she ducked back into her room, remembering a little too late that she was still wearing her dressing-gown!

She giggled as she sat at her mirror to put up her hair.

‘I fear the Earl would think me extremely forward if he could have seen me this morning!’ she reflected.

If her beloved Mama had still been alive, how she would have laughed and joined in with the fun of the day.

Her fingers coiled and pinned up her heavy locks into place and, as she dressed in a simple white and lemon dress, Martina realised that thoughts of her Mama did not now bring instant tears.
