FREE TIMING: STREAMERS AND PUNCHES

Free timing, where the conductor is “on their own,” is generally used for slower music cues which require more free-f owing emotional expression (though a slow, emotional cue can also be recorded with a click track). A cue recorded with free timing must still “hit” in the right places, however. The relevant sync points are marked in the score as “streamers” and “punches” (see Figure 7.15), with a streamer indicating preparation for a specific bar and beat and a punch a particular moment in the music or the movie; a streamer often starts or ends with a punch. There is also a variation on the punch called a “flutter punch,” which is a series of three, five, or seven punches in quick succession. The “flutter punch” is often used to mark a significant point in the movie the conductor needs to pay attention to.
